Description:
This project is in an extremely poor area of the Eastern Cape. It is for volunteers who wish to immerse themselves in an array of tasks and activities that are related to the work being done in the support of HIV/AIDS in the region. From clinic support work, such as cleaning and maintenance of the area, to child and adult care, working in food gardens and giving time to the various educational initiatives.
The project aims to cover HIV/AIDS prevention and education, early treatment, care and support, and impact mitigation in the Hamburg/South Peddie area. Recently this has expanded to include the training of health care workers and AIDS support groups in this district. This goal is achieved through the provision of clinical diagnosis and advice, medical and care awareness and skills training, and the planning and supervision of a network of monitors in the villages of the community.
This HIV/Aids Treatment Center is currently providing care and antiretroviral therapy to many people, including several children, from villages in the Peddie South area. A live- in facility has been established in Hamburg where those needing more intensive treatment or observation, or who lack stable home environments, can be accommodated for short periods. The centre also provides a safe environment where children without caregivers can receive support, care and meals.
